The Brooklyn Bedding saga began in 1995 with two Merwin brothers and their lone mattress store. Their store did not fit the traditional mold of a sleep shop. They scoured the country looking for overstock, closeouts and mattresses with minor manufacturing defects because they thought everyone should get a good night’s rest without breaking the budget. By doing this, they were able to offer name brand mattresses up to 75% off.
The Merwins' single mattress store quickly expanded to 5, 10, and then 20 stores. They decided they could do something even better – make their own mattresses. All their travels had taught them how to make a premium mattress. It made them realize how much a mattress was marked up by the time it reached a store. Customers were paying 5 and 6 times the actual cost. It wasn't reasonable or fair.
Brooklyn Bedding was born -- mattresses made in the brothers’ own factory and sold in their own store. The company was named after John's daughter, Brooklyn (no association with New York). Only premium foams and high quality fabrics were used and each mattress was constructed under stringent quality control. It went straight to the brothers’ store at an affordable price. Brooklyn Bedding became a huge in-store success, but the brothers thought they could still make those same mattresses even more affordable.
Selling their revolutionary beds online was their next natural progression. Now, they could deduct the overhead of running a store from the price and bring the consumer the same high-quality mattress at an even lower price. They created an easy return policy and one of the strongest warranties in the business.
But, they weren't done. They had always wondered why companies – especially online mattress retailers -- thought one mattress was right for everyone. They wanted to build one mattress that was actually perfect for each individual consumer. They coined the phrase “Built with Individuality in Mind” and ran with it. They started creating the best mattress at a tremendous value and through a rigorous testing process came up with three comfort levels that truly fit each individuals sleeping style. No matter what weight or sleeping position, you will find the perfect comfort level with a Brooklyn Bedding mattress!
